I had the tree folks out today to take down five trees: four pine and one sweetgum. They brought in this crane to get them down- the pines were about 85 feet tall.
The fellow cutting down the trees would get hauled up into the trees with the crane. He was incredible. They took the trees out in sections. I must say it is rather amazing to watch large lengths of trees pass over the top of your house.

Did the climber first limb the trees? Then attach himself to the trunk, tie the boom lines to the tree top, cut the top, then have it hauled away? Then slide further down the trunk to do the same with the next section?

No,, they hauled the entire top out and limbed it on the driveway where they laid it down. Limbs went thru the chipper,, the logs were hauled away I hope for timber,,, the guy in the would drop a line down to measure and then they would generally cut that section in two over the driveway with the fellow on the log truck (maybe that is not what it is called but that's how i think of it)holding it up with these big hydralic pinchers. The dadgum sweetgum they cut down in two sections and stuck the entire thing in the chipper. Except where the stump grinder's tracks dug in the yard, there was no damage or debris in the yard at all (well, some pine cones),, it was absolutely amazing. The fellow in the tree got hauled up and after the first cut yes, he did then slide on down the trunk. I will send another picture of the fellow just after he had made the first cut.
The sweetgum has no value as lumber but does as woodchips/mulch, maybe bio mass fuel. The pine--I'm guessing it's yellow pine, Pinus palustris-- does, especially 4 at that length and diameter. In fact, the wood may have sold for nearly the amount charged for the removal.

It was fine with me if they could make a buck off it,, they were very slim on work since we haven't had a good ice storm this winter,,, yet. The whole deal was a little over 2K,, and they would have left the wood had we wanted it,,maybe they would have charged more,,,but I don't have the time nor the contacts to monkey with it. And they used great care. I used these fellows years ago when they were just getting started as younguns and did not have this fancy equipment. I am really pleased to see them make it. You treat me good, I am yours for life,, so to speak. Same with my honey dippers. *hydraulic,, from last post- sometimes my fingers get ahead of my brain.
