Rats

I just got back from having surgery done on one of my rat girls,, she had mammary gland tumor and I have a wonderful collegue and fellow OSU graduate (those are the best kind!) over in Chapel Hill who did the honors for me (and yes, the coincidence of beanns having her sx today is not lost on me). It might seem frivolous to pay big bucks for a fifty cent feeder rat (we got her before her eyes were open and hand raised her), but there you go. This board is filled with folks who are nuts in one way or another,, and most of us are harmless.

I don't think it's nuts, Sheila, but then I'm not known for my "sanity" where animals are concerned! Is she OK?

sheila, you love your rat, and can afford the treatment, so you care for it. there's nothing stupid about it. i'd rather care for my pet than spend the same price on a luxury item for myself.

Sheila, my sister in law is thinking of a small pet. We've talked her out of a chinchilla, but I'm wondering what might work well in our household of 5 cats--any advice?

Rosa, a lot depends on if the cats and the small pet are going to interact. As long as you have a secure cage, you can get anything you like. Mice tend to smell, gerbils aren't all that friendly in my experience, hamsters-blech. Rats are terrific but may cause hunting instincts to kick in if any of your cats are hunters. Guinea pigs are nice because of their size. Just an anecdote: A fellow cavy breeder had a kitten with a broken leg and was forced to keep the kitten crated until the leg healed. The kitten was, as you can imagine, going nuts. I said,, put in one of your big old boar pigs to keep her company. She did,,, kitten loved the pig, boar didn't care and took to eating crunchy cat food. There are some cats that will be obsessed with anything but most are interested but not consumed with desire to mess with pigs. One thing you might try is your local animal shelter. They will sometimes have pigs available. Big thing is just to have a secure cage for times when the pet and the cats are left unattended.

my animals loved the pigs. Brandi would sit and groom them for hours if i let her. I don't think the pig liked it, they're not big fans of getting wet. Lily likes to watch them and sleep unde their cage, but there was no hunting, but i think it's because we never gave her the chance.
